INSURED PATIENTS

Responsibility

Settlement of the hospital’s account is always the patient’s responsibility. You may have chosen to take out Health Insurance, but in the event of non-payment or a shortfall, settlement will be required from yourself.

Insurance Cover and Exclusions

You must contact your insurance company before your admission to check that you are adequately covered for the hospital and the treatment that your consultant has prescribed. Your insurance may exclude certain medical conditions and have a limit on cover for accommodation and other services.

Claim Forms/Pre-authorisation

You should contact your insurance company prior to any consultation or treatment for pre-authorisation or dispatch of a claim form. You must fully complete and sign your claim form which can then be handed to the Business Office at the hospital for completion by your consultant. In some instances your GP may be required to complete the claim form, in which case it remains your responsibility to have this carried out.

Direct Settlement

The hospital has agreements with most insurance companies for in-patient accounts to be settled directly to the hospital, and your completed claim form is retained to be sent to your insurer with the account. Outpatient accounts are also sent to your insurer for direct payment; no copy will be sent to you. The hospital is not obliged to process invoices from other hospitals.

Payment

Your insurance company will usually notify you in writing that your claim is being settled. They will also inform you of any shortfalls you may have incurred and explain the reasons for them. It is advisable in these events to contact our accounts department for advice. Any excess payments should be made directly to the hospital - an invoice will not be sent to you where an excess applies.

Out Of Band Benefit

This is a payment made by your insurer towards the cost of your hospital charges when you have chosen to be treated at a hospital that is in a higher band than the insurance cover you have purchased. This payment may only be a small percentage of the total cost of treatment, and so you must remember that you are personally responsible for the balance due.

Items Not Covered

Personal items are not covered by the Health Insurance Policies and payment for these should be made at the Reception Desk upon your discharge from the hospital. These sundry items include physiotherapy aids, equipment hire, alcoholic drinks, visitors’ meals and telephone charges (charged per unit with unit time dependent upon the distance of the call and the time of day).

Non-UK Insurance Policies

Non-UK Insurance is only accepted by prior arrangement between the hospital and the insurance company. The acceptance must be in writing and includes settling the account directly with the hospital.
