Gastric Banding and other Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is the name given to procedures that are designed to facilitate weight loss and are generally suggested as an option for people with a BMI (Body Mass Index) between 30 and 40.

These restrictive operations work by reducing the stomach and inhibiting hunger. The procedures involved in bariatric surgery do not interfere with normal digestion or alter your anatomy, so recovery is quicker. In some bariatric surgery, your surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach where food enters which can store about an ounce of food but may later stretch to two or three ounces. The outlet of the pouch, being only about half an inch in diameter, delays the outflow of food causing a feeling of fullness. Bariatric surgery procedures achieve the outcome of making you feel no real need to eat large portions at one time.

Gastric Banding

Gastric banding otherwise known as Adjustable Gastric Banding is a surgical procedure using a hollow silicone rubber band (gastric band) which is placed around the stomach near the top end, leaving only a narrow passage into the rest of the stomach.

This is inflated using a solution through a tube connected to an access port placed under the skin. This can be adjusted over time to change the size of the passage.

Patients who maintain the necessary changes in eating habits after the operation can lose 50-60% of their excess weight in less than two years.

Post-Operative Programme for Gastric Band Patients

Gastric band surgery gives you the physical tool to assist you in losing the weight you may have tried in vain to achieve by diet or lifestyle changes.

Studies have shown that the most successful outcome from gastric banding surgery is gained by patients who understand the need for long-term follow-up, build exercise into their daily programme and make the necessary emotional and mental changes. At Abbey Sefton Hospital we have a team who are dedicated to provide you with continuing, comprehensive help in all of these areas.

Gastric Balloon

The BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB®) procedure involves placing a soft silicone balloon that’s very strong and designed to resist the action of your stomach acid for at least six months in the stomach.

The BIB® is inserted under mild sedation by a soft tube passed through your mouth during a simple 20 minute procedure. The BIB® is then filled with saline. It’s the weight of the saline that gives you a feeling of fullness. Removal after six months is just as simple. Patients are discharged home again within a matter of hours.

The BIB® offers many advantages over conventional diets and weight-loss programmes. With the BIB® you will:

  • Have a feeling of fullness (satiety), so you are less hungry.
  • Feel fuller more quickly after small meals.
  • Lose more weight than with other diet programmes
  • Have the benefit of a non-surgical procedure
  • Expected weight loss in six months is between 15 – 20 kg.

This is dependent on how well you adopt lifestyle changes relating to eating and exercise.

The BIB® is only part of the solution. It needs your commitment and the support of your bariatric surgery team. Experts agree successful weight-loss programmes help you keep weight off over time.
