Gastric Banding Is Powerful Procedure
Written by Ann Jordan under General | 2 Comments
A gastric band operation is one of the most effective Bariatric (weight loss surgery) procedures available for weight loss and an alternative to more invasive gastric bypass surgery. This surgery is usually recommended only if non-surgical treatments, such as diet, exercise or CBT have proved unsuccessful.
The gastric banding procedure involves placing an adjustable band around the upper part of your stomach to create a pouch. This pouch fills up quickly and the food you eat then passes slowly through the narrow opening created by the band into the lower part of your stomach before passing normally through the rest of your digestive system. The gastric banding procedure is usually performed using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery under general anaesthesia and normally requires an overnight stay in hospital.
The size of the opening from the pouch is adjusted by adding or removing fluid from the band itself via a thin tube that connects the gastric band to a ‘port’ that has been placed under the skin. The band will be adjusted by your surgeon a few weeks after the operation and you’re likely to have the gastric band adjusted two or three times in the first few months after the operation.
You will need to follow a strict diet and make some lifestyle changes to get the best results from the operation and will usually be able to go home the day after the procedure. Full recovery from a gastric band operation can take two to three weeks, but, depending on the case, gastric banding has proven to be one of the most successful surgical weight loss strategies available. Fern Britton is probably the most famous recent example of just how effective this gastric banding treatment can be.
